oh thats annoying

i wonder how redtoast implemented the 95 shell since this is basically the same look and feel. But it also has a bug where the welcome window will always start up regardless of your settings, which is also a bug present in 98lite

yeah, so if it destroys windows at least u can undo it!

and i should make another batch script so that the original shell as well as the original programs can be restored!

yup that would probably be a lot less complex to create

yeah that would be cool, or at least a batch script to do that after install would use useful as well

i should backup that HDD anyways, it's only 30gb which shouldn't be too annoying to have a 30gb VHD sitting around

it'd be kind of cool if i made a batch script that would replace these files in an iso so that Windows 98 has the 95 shell at default

that pc already has plus98 with some custom icons and stuff so we'll see I guess

i will try microsoft plus from 95dl and see how that goes

The only problem is that it can't replace the wallpapers and it hangs for a while when changing themes. Icons might not also change as well

also Plus98 might not work since i tried to install it

oh thats cool, I haven't used dosbox-x before (but since my computer can run 86box basically at 100% ill still use it)

there is a lot of history on that computer, it'd be a shame if you wiped it

I did intentionally limit the RAM to 32mb because i really wanted to see how big the performance improvement was and it was quite a lot

well this is dosbox-x so it says that it can emulate a pentium 3 or something. Still it has been a remarkable experience, it has an entire installation guide online so i have been able to install windows 98 easily with all of my drivers being detected. But i did have to use their config though which meant that the CPU might be slower.

yeah true, my 8 year old win98 install is basically hanging on a thread, i'm so scared to use it out of breaking it more cause it's already destroyed + the registry got corrupted + it's been moved across 4 different computers

oh and also notepad and wordpad will break apparantely but you can just put 95 versions in there

altough you probably should backup your hard drive or AT LEAST back up the original 98 files so you can restore the original shell (i also deleted all of the other files)

also how's dosbox? i installed windows 95 in dosbox years ago but it's... unusable basically

yeah that is exactly what i did! i just replaced the default explorer.exe (C:/WINDOWS) and shell32.dll along with comdlg32.dll (C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM) with the 95 equivalents

yeah i'll probably create an article on this eventually but not when i upload the site

can you replace the shell after win98's already been installed? if so I'll do that on my win98 machine
