also youtube vanced isn't really shut down completely - it's just that it won't receive any more updates and that you cannot download it from the offical site. It still works rn but once youtube changes the youtube API to turn it into tiktok/metaverse or whatever it'll stop working. I just thought i'd say that.

oh well that's really unfortunate. I used it a bit before it was shut down, then i stopped using it because i spent ALARMING amounts of time watching youtube, and now i got back to it because the browser version sucks.

  • dvd3000Thu Jul 21, 2022 1:01 pm
yea id heard of it. i first heard of it when it was shut down by youtube
  • UserPenaltiesThu Jul 21, 2022 1:01 pm
do you know what youtube vanced is btw? i can write an essay on that if you need to understand

The mobile page that is there for youtube nowadays is also shit. It lacks so many basic features. I mean okay, you can like videos, subscribe, comment and what not but you cannot check notifications, read community posts, whatever. I was so delighted today when i realized i had an old youtube vanced APK on my phone and when it downloaded and worked, i was in absolute bliss.

wow ive never seen that before
  • UserPenaltiesThu Jul 21, 2022 12:59 pm
you couldn't do a lot of things basically, you couldn't comment, or like videos, i am not even sure you could subscribe! You surely couldn't read notifications, i know that for sure.

  • dvd3000Thu Jul 21, 2022 12:58 pm
    oh interesting
  • UserPenaltiesThu Jul 21, 2022 12:58 pm
that was actually an old unique youtube layout designed for mobile devices. It was very minimalistic, arguably more than the original 2005 website.
  • dvd3000Thu Jul 21, 2022 12:57 pm
when i first saw the new layout i was like "wtf" and instantly installed a firefox plugin to revert to the old layout, but eventually that stopped working
  • dvd3000Thu Jul 21, 2022 12:57 pm
yea the old html youtube layout worked fine for so long, i wish they kept it around

too bad those phones didn't support mp4s. not even my android 2.3 phone supports mp4s and it is a bummer really. I don't think there is a better alternative for a video format.
  • UserPenaltiesThu Jul 21, 2022 12:56 pm
i also used to watch youtube on it in maybe 2019? i don't remember the pandemic sooooo but anyways it was quite acceptable at the time, as it could render videos in 480p. You had to open youtube in a HTML browser to be able to change quality settings though, as opera mini for some reason wouldn't load those settings and would play videos in quality that is worse than watching a .3gp

oh and something funny - dule74 said that he dreamt about playing minecraft on a brickphone, and i did found a really old minecraft clone for those phones that was fully 3d. When i installed it and ran it, it was running at 4fps

it is that kind of old phone which only comes with built in apps and some storage for messages and custom midi ringtones. It does have a "radio" option however, so it could be fun to test if it works. However that would probably involve getting myself in all those cables so i don't see it happening any time soon

i actually do have those type of earphones designed for smaller jacks - and i even have a phone that supports those earphones, however it's really old and has no internal memory of sorts
